The most versatile onion
The yellow onion is one of the most used onions in everyday cooking, with its intense and balanced flavour, making it extremely versatile for culinary uses. There is a variety within this, normally labelled under the name of “Spanish yellow onion”, which is sweeter and delicate in flavour.
Appearance
Its size varies depending on the calibres, ranging between 30 and 120 mm approximately. The flesh is white, and it has a golden or pale yellow papery skin.
Flavour
The flavour is slightly pungent when raw, but mellow once cooked.
Buying and storing tips
Yellow onions are available year-round, maintaining their excellent sweet flavour. If you plan to use the onions a few days after buying them, store them at room temperature in a cool, dark place. If you want to store them for longer, ideally wrap them individually in a paper towel and place in a breathable vegetable storage bag inside the refrigerator. The chopped onion can also be stored in a plastic container inside the refrigerator for a few days.
Uses
They are extremely versatile. They are perfect in soups, stews, casseroles and are delicious caramelised.
